I was totally floored during some of the Luke scenes.
Okay, I can accept the Luke/Ryan friendship, because whatever hatred Luke bears towards Ryan for "stealing his girl," on some level Luke realizes that he screwed up the relationship, and that Ryan was one of the few guys that has "had his back" recently.
However, I can't understand Luke bringing clothes to his ex-girlfriend to spend time with the crazy guy she is seeing.
While Julie Cooper is constantly portrayed as a little nuts and a lousy mother, the scene of her packing a bag of clothes for Marissa was REALLY over the top. The character is 16, not 25!
BTW: where the hell is the little coop? The one that lives with her mother (and doesn't travel to Paris with mom and mom's boyfriend)? When Julie goes to Paris, the little girl wasn't seen with her father.
Has Marissa's kid sister just been quietly dropped or does the girl at least nominally exist?

I think little Coop will show up the next time someone has a big OC gala and they need more bodies. And yeah, the whole thing with Julie packing a bag for her teenage daughter to go spend the weekend with the psycho kid at his hotel apartment- wtf?? What mother would be cool with that? Its not like they're real white trash or anything- even if Julie Cooper used to be, now they live in the OC. You don't do stuff like that in the OC. Seth Cohen would never approve. I would laugh so hard if Luke got a threesome with the Coop-ladies!!

From what I gather, Julie Cooper used to be poor and slutty- then she got knocked up by Jimmy Cooper. At that time, she was real white trash. Now she's all rich and gold digging- not really white trash. She's white trash that came into money.

Ah- well, little coop wasn't *actually* at this week's gala, BUT Julie Cooper did mention her. So I was mostly right.

Right, while it is clear that the role will rarely be played out, I'm glad to see that some continuity is being maintained. And Caitlin still exists if there is a "Cooper Episode" where their family's interworkings is displayed (like a visit from Julie's mother and the need to play games).
However, I'm glad with the mention because it implies that they aren't just dropping characters without reason. It's okay to keep them in the background, so there is room to explore the situation later.
Much like the big "parties." We only see one ever 4-5 episodes now, but we know that they happen 1/week. Therefore, if we see a storyline that requires us seeing parties/galas every episodes for 5 episodes, it won't seem out of place, as we know that the characters are going to them anyways (like me know that they go to class).
In fact, they could do the entire Theresa storyline at the parties, although I'm sure that they have more interesting ideas.
