That's complete BS... Death Cab had a huge Indie following way before the OC was in existence... Seth Cohen had nothing to do with this. Their newfound fame is mostly due to their signing to Atlantic... and it makes me sick that just because they get their name dropped a few times on a lame show, that means you all become their instant fans, when really all the songs you know are "Title and Registration" and "The Sound of Settling."
Maybe you even purchased a copy of Transatlanticism, but you probably only liked a few of the songs. You can't claim to love Death Cab unless you've actually listened to all their stuff, or at least half of it. Do yourselves a favor and go out and buy "We Have The Facts and We're Voting Yes," then go home and listen to it. Just listen. THEN decide if you like Death Cab for Cutie or not.

Dude calm down!
I've knew about Death Cab for Cutie for years as well and don't lecture me about only knowing a few songs I have all the albums and also all Ben Gibbards side stuff like Postal Service and All-time quarterback. Plus The Photo Ablum is better than We Have The Facts...
And P.S if you don't like the show get the f%$# off the forum and why are you on it in the first place.

Yeah, there are exceptions to the rule. You should know better than to think I'm lecturing you in particular. I'm speaking to the people who say they love Death Cab for Cutie simply because Seth says they are good. You know it's not true Seth Cohen is the reason for their success if you have been following them the same way I have. The OC, if anything, is making them more mainstream in a bad way. Sure, it's getting them fans, but those fans will only move on to the next flavor of the week when it comes along. They don't love the band, they love that other people love the band. Some may even obsess over the band... spend their free time talking about how much Death Cab for Cutie "rox," while never taking the time to actually listen to the music, to enjoy it for what it is, not what it represents or how catchy it sounds.
Just look at what happened with Taking Back Sunday... they put out a solid first album, had lots of potential, then they drop their second album (minus John Nolan, who apparently was what made the band good), which is the definition of mediocrity. All of the sudden people start to like them. That has grown into a lame subculture (emo kids), full of the same people who 1 year ago liked Good Charlotte and New Found Glory, or maybe still do. Personally, I REALLY don't want that to happen to Death Cab, but if it does, I hope the people who call themselves "Cabbies," or whatever word develops from the music, will at least recognize that there WAS a Death Cab before Transatlanticism hit, before the OC hurled them headfirst into mainstream culture, before the Atlantic signing, and THAT Death Cab played damn good music.
I don't hate the show, I just hate 90% of the fans of the show. I personally agree with you about Photo Album, but the problem is many people get caught up with songs like "A Movie Script Ending" and "I Was a Kaleidoscope." Catchy rhythms and nice melodies, but not a reflection of DCFC's best work in my opinion.
It's quite similar to what has happened with The Postal Service... you hear people raving about Such Great Heights, seemingly oblivious to the other nine tracks on the album. Facts, on the other hand, has somber, mellow melodies that introduce people to the other side of Death Cab for Cutie, the side that most long-term fans enjoy, the side that shines through in Styrofoam Plates, All is Full of Love, and especially 405. In my experience, it's Facts that helps most people see the other side of Death Cab. Assuming, of course, that they will ever be able to see the other side.
I may have come across as a little harsh, but I'm fed up with talking to ignorant people who say they "heart" death cab for cutie, but know almost nothing about them. Usually, they don't like any other songs besides those on Trans. Unfortunately, the band has missed out on a great opportunity to introduce the masses to all their Barsuk work by launching The John Byrd EP on a larger scale, but I suppose it's also an important statement to make by releasing it on a small scale.
Death Cab is too good to become the next Taking Back Sunday, and, as unlikely as that is of happening, if it does happen, the OC will probably be responsible. Just imagine it... Gibbard walking down the red carpet at the Grammys, responding to the swarm of questions from reporters about the recent tabloid rumors that The Postal Service is no more, with Walla behind him signing autographs, wearing a fake grin. It's not too far off if the order of things continues, unfortunately. To me, that's something that justifies being frustrated, and wanting change.

oh come on as much as i think you may be funny, that kind of remark isn't necessary, the person obviously needs many words to explain his/her point, so fine
i personally don't know death cab for cutie's music, they haven't released any of their albums in france and i've never heard it on the oc since we're still beginning of the first season
but i understand the point that was made, there is definitely a risk: it IS great to think that there will be more people listening to that type of music, especially if it's good but on the other hand it kind of sucks because most of the time the band changes (and not necessarily intentionally) their music, it becomes more mainstream and commercial
then again music shouldn't be some kind of elite thing where only a minority listens to the "good" bands and the others get the crap from the radio, meaning i don't really like the attitude some bands have, like "our music is different, you have to be such and such a person to understand it or like it" (maybe that's why so far so little people listen to indie bands)

Cool. I just hope they have a proper role in the episode and don't show up just to play a few songs. And that they get an actual storyline, and it's not painfully obvious they've just been put in to promote their songs. Anyone remember Sheryl Crow on OTH, singing for a coffee?
