They had the storylines there to use, but didn't.

I was very surprised (and disappointed) by how quickly they wrapped the Trey storyline. Did they, the writers, seriously expect everything to magicly conclude in one episode? Give me a break!
I think the biggest problem came from the fact that Logan Marshall Green was contracted by another network to film another tv series. I'm not sure if the series ever got picked up, but he was contractually obligated to another network. I believe that was the main reason the storyline wrapped so quick.
They needed a solid 3-6 episodes to conclude the Trey storyline. And then they needed a solid 3-6 episodes to see how Marissa and Ryan would mend their relationship. Everything was just WRONG with season 3. Nothing went right, from beginning to end.
