The OC - Season II

Episode 1 - "The Hunt"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The Hunt"

'Previously on The OC' shows that Sandy finds out that Caleb is gone bankrupt, the wedding ceremony, Ryans departure and Seth's departure in the end.

Kirsten is sitting in the couch (livingroom) reading Seth's letter. She is suprisingly patient as to the outcome of this letter, she is confused and angry.

Sandy walks in from the kitchen and sits down by her side.

KIRSTEN: But why? Why would he do this?
SANDY: These days, weeks, YEARS have been tough on him. You know that.
KIRSTEN: Yes, but why right now?
SANDY: I guess he just felt the time was right. And besides, he couldn't have made it all the way to Tahiti by now.

Kirsten suddenly realizes how serious this is situation and start's looking for the portable phone. She find's it, but as she grabs it Sandy lays his head on top of hers.

SANDY: I allready called them. I've called the Police and the Coastguard and they are looking as we speak.

Kirsten is obviously reliefed - takes a deep breath.

KIRSTEN: Thank you..
SANDY: Hey, this is some ruff times for all of us. I mean, I thought this summer was to be the best in a LONG time.
KIRSTEN: Yeah me to, for a while there - everything was so perfect.
SANDY: Well, atleast I have Julie Cooper keeping my spirits up high.
KIRSTEN: Yes about that, did you.. You know.. Apologize?
SANDY: I kindof did and it paid off, that much I can tell you.
KIRSTEN: I'm glad..
SANDY: And so am I..

Sandy smiles and The OC intro begins.

Camera shows Caleb's new build mansion from all thinkable perspectives before entering Marissa's new bedroom. She hasn't had the time move out yet and that is obvious for the trained eye to see.
The alarmclock signals Marissa that now is the time to wake up, and seize the day.
Marissa still has a very hard headache and she is not in the mood for small talk - of course - Julie see's time to make her move and she enters Marissa bedroom, she is not met with joy from Marissa's sleepy eyes.

JULIE: Goodmorning sunshine.

Julie parts the curtains and the morning sun penetrates the room. It is now bright and shiny, and you realize how big it is.
Marissa mumbles.

MARISSA: Arrghh go away.
JULIE: Excuse me?
MARISSA: I need to sleep.
JULIE: Honey, sleeping isn't gonna help anything.

Julie grabs her arm but Marissa turns around and yells.

MARISSA: What do you want from me?!

Julie smells the nausiating smell of liquor from Marissa's breath and she doesn't hesetate to ask.

JULIE: Have you been drinking?

Marissa realizes that she isn't going to get much sleep, so she might as well accept the challenge.

MARISSA: What do you care?
JULIE: It isn't gonna solve any of your problems you know.
MARISSA: Yeah, but I bet marrying an old man for his money would.

Julie looks chocked (surprisingly, that being the 40th time she is being told the same thing)

JULIE: Watch your mouth.
MARISSA: Get out of my room.

As Julie is about to leave the room she turns around and whispers.

JULIE: I am not going to let you ruin my relationship with Caleb.
MARISSA: You will probably take care of that yourself anyway.

Julie eats the remark, spins on her heels and leaves the room.
Marissa gets up and walks onto the veranda. As her eyes capture every moment of the ocean. She is beginning to think a bit more clearly, and she realizes what actually happened last night.
She doesn't quite know how to cope with things, so she get's dressed and rushes off to the Cohen's place - to hear if anything new has come up.

THE COHEN'S ESTATE - Morning

The door to the Cohen's estate is open. Marissa wonders why, but proceeds through the door anyway. As she enters the livingroom, she see's Kirsten in the couch with a look in her eyes that is undescribably sad. No tears though, just real genuine pain.
Marissa hesetates at first, thinking she might be better off not asking any questions but yet she feels obligated to ask what it is that's going on.
She notices Seth's letter in Kirsten's lap and ask's.

MARISSA: Hey.. Where is Seth?
Kirsten is on the edge of breaking down.
KIRSTEN: He is.. He's gone.
MARISSA: What? What do you mean? Gone!?
KIRSTEN: He took his boat.. Last night..

Marissa is even more shocked now and you can see that the temporary joy in her eyes are replaced by dread.
MARISSA: But.. Why?
KIRSTEN: I guess Ryan was the only thing keeping him here, and now that he is gone..
MARISSA: This can't be happening..
KIRSTEN: It is. All of our worst nightmares all are falling into each other at the same time.
MARISSA: But, where is he? Have you called the police?
KIRSTEN: Sandy called this morning, they haven't had any accidents reported so atleast he is still safe..
KIRSTEN: But why us? What have we done to deserve all of this.

Marissa hugs Kirsten in the couch and it clearly helps getting all of it out. Kirsten is now wiping the tears of her eyes and she picks up the second letter.
She hesetates for a few seconds before handing it over to Marissa.

KIRSTEN: Can you give this to Summer? It's from Seth.

Marissa takes the envelope and looks at it briefly before replying.

MARISSA: Yes, of course.
MARISSA: I'm heading over there right now.

Marissa hugs Kirsten goodbye and says.

MARISSA: We'll make it through this, you know it.

Kirsten finds the words comforting, yet them being a TV soap cliché.

KIRSTEN: I hope..

Marissa leaves and Kirsten just can't seem to find the energy to get up of the coach so she decides to stay put. Holding the letter from Seth close to her heart.

Marissa wanders towards Summer's house, and she is clearly - emotionally distressed. She has the same look on her eyes, filled with despair, as she had the same time last year.
Before she know's it, she is facing Summer's front door. Newport is quiet this morning, and no one even suspects the bomb that is about be dropped. Peoples lives are beginning to change, and Marissa takes the first step - towards a new life, again.

Marissa knocks carefully on the door.
No one answers and she tries again.

Summer is very sleepy and she has hardly opened her eyes when answering the door and she is quite surprised to see Marissa being the early bird this morning.

SUMMER: Coop, it's 9 AM?

Marissa's eyes once again drop to her feet and Summer see's the potential issue as she spots the letter that has her name on it.

SUMMER: What's this?

Marissa unwillingly hands over the envelope to her. Summer is unpatiently waiting for the letter to come into her hands and as it does, she rips it open with her nails (still bearing the glance of yesterday).
She unfolds the letter and begins reading it. As she is halfway through it, Marissa notices a tear dropping from her eye. Summer instantly wipe's it off with a quick movement.
She is allmost near the ending of the letter as the letter drops from her hands and she runs into Marissa's arms. No words needs to be said, as this is an undescribable emotional happening between Summer and Marissa.

SUMMER: How.. could he do this to me? I mean he said we were going to make it through this. Why am I crying for him?
MARISSA: Because you care about him...

Summer unleashes herself from Marissa's comfort and tries to hide her tears.
She is forcing herself not to cry.

SUMMER: Whatever his reasons are, I hope he is ready to deal with the consequences.
MARISSA: I understand but.
SUMMER: But what? He obviously doesn't care about me any more - do you know how that makes me feel?

Marissa doesn't know what to say and is quite surprised of this sudden emotional breakout from Summer.

SUMMER: I am tired of being his emotional ginnypig, i have feelings to you know.

Summer has now reversed her grief into anger but Marissa seizes the moment and hug's Summer again.

SUMMER: I can't take this anymore..
MARISSA: I understand you..

THE COHEN'S ESTATE - Morning

Kirsten has finally managed to pull herself out of the couch and is now on Seth's room. She is going through Seth's stuff, touching every single object present in the room - in hope of finding a piece of Seth.
She walks towards Captain Oats and picks him up as Sandy comes in from behind. Sandy wraps his arms around her and says (with a comforting voice).

SANDY: We will find him.

Kirsten is trying to cover up her sceptisism on the subject.

KIRSTEN: I hope. I will never be able to forgive myself if anything happens to him.
SANDY: Hey, listen to me. It wasn't your fault, it wasn't anyones fault. Seth made this descision on his own. Maybe he didn't choose the right moment and maybe he should have told us. But he has been planning on this for years.
KIRSTEN: I know but..
SANDY: No but's, that is my new policy. Let's go down and catch some breakfast.
KIRSTEN: I'm not hungry.
SANDY: Not now maybe, but when you smell the sense of homecooked breakfast you will change your mind.

Sandy leaves the room, but Kirsten is still having some second thoughts about leaving Seth's room. She is still holding Captain Oats close to her, in search of answers. Answers who only Seth is capable of giving them.

Camera is drifting alongst the shore and switches to a coastal guard vessil down the coast between Solana Beach and San Diego. Suddenly they see the catamaran and as they close in on the boat they are able to read the boat's name on it.
They quickly report it over the radio and they check wether this vessil has been reported missing or not. By the time they are about 3 meters from the boat, they see a boy - lying across on the deck. Only a few inches are ensuring that he doesn't fall into the water.
The coastal guard tries, with great care, to board the boat and they suceed. A member of the crew present, makes sure the boat isn't going anywhere by attaching it to their own boat and as the captain gives the signal he boars the 'Summer Breeze' to find out wether there are any casualties.
He carefully put's his hand on Seth's pulse and he turns around and yells.

COASTAL GUARD #1: I have a vague pulse.
COASTAL GUARD #2: Allright boys, pull him in and attach the vessil to the rearside of the boat.

The third guard reports over the radio.

COASTAL GUARD #3: This is Nemesis 3, over.
RADIO: Come in Nemesis 3, over.
COASTAL GUARD #3: We have found a vessil of the shore between Solana and San Diego, over.
RADIO: Any casualties. What is the name of the boat, over.

Coastal Guard #3 yells to #2 (Seth is now on the Coastguard vessil and #1 is making sure he stays warm)

COASTAL GUARD #3: What is the name of the vessil, Peter?
COASTAL GUARD #2: It's Summer Breeze, sir.

Coastal Guard #3 returns to his radio.

COASTAL GUARD #3: The name of the vessil is Summer Breeze, one caucasian male found. He is exhausted but general shape is good, over.
RADIO: Roger that. Summer Breeze was reported missing from Newport Bay last night, an ETA on arrival, over.
COASTAL GUARD #3: Arrival at Solana Beach is ETA 14 minutes and counting, we are going to need a paramedic waiting on the docks, over.
RADIO: 10-4 Nemesis, over.

Coastal Guard #3 leaves the radio and ask's #1.

COASTAL GUARD #3: How is he doing?
COASTAL GUARD #1: He is alive but he is tired and exhausted. Two storms collided out here last night, and it seem's he sailed right into it.
COASTAL GUARD #3: Amazing, he is lucky to be alive.
COASTAL GUARD #1: From where?
COASTAL GUARD #3: Newport Bay.
COASTAL GUARD #1: Wonder why anyone would want to escape from Newport Bay?

Coastal Guard #3 laugh's of #1's "joke".
Coastal Guard #3 signals for #2 to bring the Nemesis home. Meanwhile, the onshore coastal guard is trying to get in contact with the Cohen's.

ON SHORE COASTAL GUARD'S OFFICE - Morning

The operator has found the necessary information and is about to call the Cohen's. She dials the number and it is ringing.

INT. CUT - COHEN'S ESTATE - The phone is ringing in the kitchen and Kirsten runs from the livingroom into the kitchen grabbing it.

KIRSTEN: Hello..

Sandy is now standing opposite to her on the other side of the table - curiously awaiting Kirsten's reaction.

OPERATOR: May I speak with Sandy or Kirsten Cohen?
KIRSTEN: Yes, it's Kirsten Cohen speaking..
OPERATOR: I am calling from the Solana Beach Coastal Guard, it is about your son - Seth Cohen.
KIRSTEN: Is he okay? Where was he found? Is he allright? (With a nearby shivering voice)
OPERATOR: He is generally in good condition but he has been in some ruff waters the last 24 hours.
KIRSTEN: Where is he now?

Sandy is clearly reliefed to find Seth alive as they expected the worst.

OPERATOR: He is under observation on San Diego General. You can come see him anytime you like.
KIRSTEN: Thank you.. Thank you very much.
OPERATOR: No problem, have nice day - goodbye.

INT. CUT ENDS.

Kirsten hangs up the phone and the despair in her is once again replaced by joy. Though there are still so many questions floating about in the room their mood's seem to be on their way up.
They are going to see their son as soon as possible. Sandy turns around (has been watching the oceanview) and walks towards Kirsten to show her that he is still there for her even though this 'bump on the road' is closing in on it's ending.

SANDY: Should we call Summer?
KIRSTEN: She needs to know..

Sandy looks Kirsten in the eyes and says.

SANDY: Hey, we'll get through this.
KIRSTEN: I just wish Ryan was here. He reached Seth somehow. We have tried to reach him for so many years - it's just with Ryan it seemed so easy.
SANDY: Trust me, nothing about Ryan is easy. But he made his choice, and there is nothing we can do about it.
KIRSTEN: I just.. Miss him.
SANDY: We all do.. We all do..

Sandy unleashes himself and starts packing the necessary things for their little trip to San Diego.

In the meantime, Kirsten grabs the phone and call's Summer.

INT. CUT - Camera closes in on Summer 5-6 seconds before her phone ring's showing her sitting on the side of her bed - holding Princess Sparkles. She is confused, she doesn't know wether anger or dread is appropriate. She can't figure out wether she should be crying or not.
But the fact is that she is, she is crying like no one has ever seen her cry before. She finally allowed herself to really dedicate herself to Seth and be there for him. She feel's abandoned by Seth because she percieved Seth's little stunt as Seth's escape from Summer.
Her expression ask's only one question. A question which she doesn't care about but at the same time would die to find the right answer. The question?.. Why.
She hesetates to pick up her phone. It is ringing for the 4th time and the ending is near, its now or never. She makes her choice, grabs the phone and tryes to collect herself in order to sound as if she were a hole person when speaking on the phone.

SUMMER: Yeah (wipes her eye)
KIRSTEN: Hey Summer, It's Kirsten.

Summer suddenly came alive.

SUMMER: Kirsten!? Any news? About.. Seth.
KIRSTEN: Yes, we have some good news. That's why I'm calling.
SUMMER: Is he okay?
KIRSTEN: He is fine, he is in a hospital down South. In San Diego.
SUMMER: San Diego (surprised). Isn't that like, far away?
KIRSTEN: An hour drive I think. But me and Sandy were wondering - we really think it would mean a lot to him if you could come down with us to visit him.
SUMMER: Sure, of course..
KIRSTEN: We'll be there in ten minutes.
SUMMER: Okay, see you then.

Summer forgot something.

SUMMER: And oh Kirsten?
KIRSTEN: Yes..
SUMMER: Thank you.. For calling.
KIRSTEN: No problem..
SUMMER: Bye.

INT. CUT - Ends.

As Summer hangs up she is once again confused. But now she is even more determined to make things work with Seth than before - she is not letting him off the hook this easily.
She changes her clothes and get's ready to reunite with her beloved one.

Jimmy and Hailey are temporarily still living in the flat on Newport Beach untill the new house is ready. Jimmy has allready began packing and he is doing just this as Marissa knocks on the door.
Jimmy opens the door and is surprised to see Marissa, imagining that she would have other things to do than being with her father now.

JIMMY: Marissa.. What!? (Marissa cuts him off short)

A tear drops from Marissa's eyes and she seeks the comforting warmth of her father's arms and shoulders. She whispers into his ear.

MARISSA: Dad.. I need help..
JIMMY: What's going on (with a comforting tone in his voice)
MARISSA: It's Seth, now he is gone..
JIMMY: What? When did this happen? Why?
MARISSA: Because.. (chokes).. Because of Ryan.
JIMMY: I'm sorry..
MARISSA: I dont want to live with mom anymore.. I want to live with you..
JIMMY: Kiddo you know that isn't my descision to make (trying to let her down easily).

Marissa breaks off Jimmy and ask's.

MARISSA: Can't you atleast try? You don't know what it's like for me to live there.

Marissa is finally having Jimmy convinced and Jimmy feels obligated to give it another shot.

JIMMY: I'm gonna try, but I can't promise you anything. You know how she is about these things, especially with all this fuzz about - well, everything pretty much sums it up.

Marissa hug's Jimmy.

MARISSA: Thanks, you know how much this means to me.
JIMMY: I do.. I do (claps her back and comforts her. It is working)

Camera switches to the roads along the coast. Sandy took the BMW with Summer and Kirsten down South to retrieve Seth from the hospital.
In the car, the silence is dominating. No one knows how to begin the conversation in times like these. Everything just seems shallow and inappropriate.
Kirsten had on several occassions tried to break through, but the mood isn't there. What is keeping them from speaking in the car, is ironicly their equally strong love for Seth.

Caleb is surprisingly still in bed after his wedding night. He is just about to slumber back into happyness as Julie interupts his temporary feeling of sanity.

JULIE: Goodmorning Cal, and what a beautyful morning it is.

Julie bend's over Caleb and kisses him goodmorning.
Caleb is about to ask Julie a question that he has been trying to find the words for in a long time.

CALEB: Julie?

Julie, who is running abouts in the room trying to return it's original state of tidyness, turns around and replies.

JULIE: Yes?
CALEB: If I didn't have any money, would you still be marrying me?
JULIE: Of course I would, how could you ever doubt my love for you? (Seals it off with a kiss).
JULIE: Who would start such a (looks for the right word) viscious rumor?
CALEB: No one, I was just look for some confirmation - Not that I didnt know the answer allready.
JULIE: I love you Cal.
CALEB: I love you too. I hope we can put all of these past events behind us, and start off fresh.

Julie once again seals it off with a kiss. Afterall, its easier to kiss a man than to tell him how you really feel.
