Star birth in the Orion Nebula
The radiant energy from the four bright central stars known as the Trapezium - born between 300,000 and million years ago - excites molecules in a huge underlying cloud. Nitrogen appears as red, while oxygen and hydrogen appear as shades of blue and green.
To the naked eye the entire nebula appears as a small blob in the constellation Orion. But so vast is the region that light from the stars would take three years to cross it.
